These are the questions Boston homeowners, landlords and business owners ask us most often, with short answers. They cover price, permits, lead paint in older homes, the painting season and deposits. Our guide pages go deeper on each topic. If your question is missing, call or text (617) 553-6484.
How much does it cost to paint a house in Boston?
By national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, a whole interior costs $3,500 to $10,000 and an exterior $3,000 to $10,000 for an average 2,000 square foot home. Those are not our quotes. Size, height, prep and the age of the building set your price, and we give it in writing after a free estimate.
Do I need a permit to paint my house in Boston?
No. The Massachusetts building code lists painting as work that does not need a building permit. Exterior changes in a historic district such as Beacon Hill are reviewed by the district commission, and condo associations often control exterior colors.
My house was built before 1978. What about lead paint?
Old paint layers may contain lead. Massachusetts says a licensed lead-safe renovation contractor must be used to renovate, repair or paint a home built before 1978. Loose paint is removed with dust control and cleanup, not dry power sanding.
When is the best time to paint an exterior in Boston?
Late spring to early fall, roughly mid May to early October. Paint needs mild temperatures and dry wood. Interior and cabinet work can be done all year, and winter is a good time for it.
Does a painter need a license in Massachusetts?
There is no state painter's license. Exterior painting on owner-occupied homes of one to four units requires Home Improvement Contractor registration with the state, and work on pre-1978 homes requires a lead-safe renovation license. The Painting Company Of Boston is licensed and insured.
How much deposit can a painter ask for in Massachusetts?
On a home improvement contract, the deposit cannot be more than one third of the total price or the actual cost of special order materials. Contracts over $1,000 must be in writing.
How long does it take?
Most rooms take 1-2 days. A full exterior usually takes 3-5 days, depending on weather.
Do you do the prep work?
Yes. Patching, sanding, caulking and priming are part of the job and the quote.
Do I need to move my furniture?
We move and cover furniture and protect floors. We only ask you to put away small and fragile items.
What paint do you use?
Quality paints from major brands, chosen for the surface and the local weather. We can match a color you already have.
