The Painting Company Of Boston paints homes, condos, rental units and businesses in Boston and the cities just north and west of it. Our home base is Somerville, and we work every week in Cambridge, Medford, Arlington, Brookline and the Boston neighborhoods from Charlestown to Jamaica Plain. We are licensed and insured. Jobs range from one bedroom or a set of kitchen cabinets to the full exterior of a three-family house.
Greater Boston's housing is old, and that shapes how we paint. Inside, most walls are plaster with deep wood trim, so repairs and sanding come before color. Outside, clapboard and shingle face freezing winters, wet springs, humid summers and salt air near the water, and paint only lasts when the wood under it is dry, sound and primed. Buildings from before 1978 may have lead in old layers, and we plan the prep with that in mind.
A job starts with a call, a text or the form on this page. We visit, look at every surface, measure and ask how you use the space. You receive a written quote that lists the prep, the paint and the price. On the agreed day we protect floors, furniture and plantings, do the repairs, prime and apply the finish coats. We clean up, then walk the work with you and fix anything you point out.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to paint a house in Boston?
By national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, a whole interior costs $3,500 to $10,000 and an exterior $3,000 to $10,000 for an average 2,000 square foot home. Those are not our quotes. Size, height, prep and the age of the building set your price, and we give it in writing after a free estimate.
Do I need a permit to paint my house in Boston?
No. The Massachusetts building code lists painting as work that does not need a building permit. Exterior changes in a historic district such as Beacon Hill are reviewed by the district commission, and condo associations often control exterior colors.
My house was built before 1978. What about lead paint?
Old paint layers may contain lead. Massachusetts says a licensed lead-safe renovation contractor must be used to renovate, repair or paint a home built before 1978. Loose paint is removed with dust control and cleanup, not dry power sanding.
When is the best time to paint an exterior in Boston?
Late spring to early fall, roughly mid May to early October. Paint needs mild temperatures and dry wood. Interior and cabinet work can be done all year, and winter is a good time for it.
Does a painter need a license in Massachusetts?
There is no state painter's license. Exterior painting on owner-occupied homes of one to four units requires Home Improvement Contractor registration with the state, and work on pre-1978 homes requires a lead-safe renovation license. The Painting Company Of Boston is licensed and insured.
How much deposit can a painter ask for in Massachusetts?
On a home improvement contract, the deposit cannot be more than one third of the total price or the actual cost of special order materials. Contracts over $1,000 must be in writing.
